Yegor Chinakhov makes Penguins debut after trade from Columbus

Yegor Chinakhov has taken the ice with the Pittsburgh Penguins for the first time since his trade from Columbus. The 23-year-old winger joined morning skate on Monday, marking a fresh start after a tough run with injuries. His arrival follows a December deal that sent Danton Heinen and two draft picks to the Blue Jackets in exchange for his services.

Chinakhov’s move to Pittsburgh came on 30 December 2025, with the Penguins giving up Heinen, a 2026 second-round pick, and a 2027 third-round selection. The trade aligns with the team’s focus on adding young, experienced players between 22 and 25 years old.

At his first practice, Chinakhov skated alongside Ben Kindel and Rutger McGroarty, also seeing time on the second power-play unit. Head coach Dan Muse highlighted the winger’s speed, skillset, and powerful shot as standout qualities. Meanwhile, president of hockey operations Kyle Dubas believes Chinakhov can bridge the gap between the team’s veteran stars and its emerging youth movement. Injuries have slowed Chinakhov’s progress in the NHL so far. But his enthusiasm remains high, with the player eager to contribute to wins in Pittsburgh. Teammate Erik Karlsson has already welcomed the addition, adding to the optimism surrounding his potential impact.

The Penguins see Chinakhov as a future top-line winger if he stays healthy. His first practice session suggests he will slot into the lineup quickly. The team’s investment in his talent could pay off as the season progresses.
