Yearly honors presented at the Ig Nobel Ceremony, acknowledging scientific studies that provoke amusement

The annual Ig Nobel Prize ceremony, a whimsical counterpart to the prestigious Nobel Prizes, took place on September 18, 2020, at Boston University in Massachusetts. Organised by the Annals of Improbable Research, the event honours bizarre scientific discoveries that often leave us amused, yet intrigued.

This year, the ceremony featured presentations related to various scientific work, including a study that showed drinking alcohol sometimes improves a person's ability to speak in a foreign language, and another on the physics of pasta sauce. The Ig Nobel Prizes are known for their ability to make people laugh and think, a sentiment echoed by master of ceremonies, Marc Abrahams, who stated that every Ig Nobel Prize winner's work first makes people laugh and then makes them think.

The Ig Nobel Prizes are not only entertaining but also serve a higher purpose. They aim to promote global research and innovation, encouraging thought after initial laughter. One group of winners this year were nutrition researchers who studied the eating habits of a certain kind of lizard regarding pizza. Another group of winners included researchers who studied how narcissists react when told they are intelligent, although the winners for the "Psychology" category in 2025 are yet to be announced.

The ceremony was filled with unique elements, such as miniature opera-like acts singing songs about digestion, and audience members throwing paper planes. The prize for this year's ceremony was a model of a human stomach with two sides resembling a human face.

The Ig Nobel Prizes are a unique award distinct from the Nobel Prizes, offering a light-hearted approach to recognising scientific achievements. They remind us that sometimes, the most unusual discoveries can lead to the most profound insights.
