Yasmin Shakarami's 'Tokioregen' Comes to Life at InterLese 2025
Join us for an enchanting literary evening as Yasmin Shakarami, a Munich-based novelist of Hungarian-Iranian descent, takes the stage at the Central Library on Hallmarkt in Halle. Despite the ongoing renovations, the city library will open its doors on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 7 PM for the 'InterLese 2025' reading festival.
Shakarami, who studied philosophy in Munich, will present her debut novel 'Tokioregen', a captivating tale that has resonated with young adults and earned a spot on the Spiegel bestseller list. The story follows 16-year-old Malu, who embarks on an exchange year in Tokyo, a city Shakarami herself has experienced firsthand.
Drawing from her own sojourn in Tokyo, Shakarami weaves into her narrative the impact of the Tohoku earthquake in March 2011, adding a layer of authenticity and depth to her storytelling. Before settling in Vancouver to found a school for German language, literature, and philosophy, Shakarami called Lübeck home around the time of 'Tokioregen's release in 2025.
Mark your calendars for this not-to-be-missed event, where Yasmin Shakarami will share her unique perspective and captivating narrative. Despite the city library's current closure, the reading will proceed as planned, offering a rare opportunity to engage with this talented author.
