Yanks delivered three home runs, besting Orioles
The New York Yankees emerged victorious in a thrilling game against the Baltimore Orioles at the Stadium, with a final score of 8-6. The Yankees, aiming to win the series before a four-game series against the first-place Blue Jays, showcased their resilience and determination.
The game began on a challenging note for the Yankees, as they trailed the Orioles 4-1 after the second inning. However, the team rallied back in the fifth, with three home runs propelling them to victory.
Greg Bird played a pivotal role in the comeback, hitting a three-run homer in the fifth inning, making the score 8-5 in favour of the Yankees. This was Bird's homer of the game, and it was hit off lefty reliever Brian Matusz, who was brought in to face the left-handed hitting first baseman.
Alex Rodriguez also contributed to the rally with his 29th homer of the season. Rodriguez's homer was hit against left-handed pitcher Wei-Yin Chen.
John Ryan Murphy, too, made his mark with a two-run home run in the fifth inning, giving the Yankees a lead of 5-4. This was Murphy's third homer of the season.
Justin Wilson, on the other hand, allowed a one-out homer to Manny Machado in the seventh inning, tying the game at 5-5. However, the Yankees retook the lead for good in the next half-inning, thanks to Bird's three-run homer.
Michael Pineda pitched six innings for the Yankees, allowing four runs, six hits, and two walks. The game was attended by 31,039 spectators.
It's worth noting that Brian Matusz, the lefty reliever who allowed Bird's three-run homer, was a pitcher for the Baltimore Orioles. However, Matusz passed away on January 6, 2025, so he did not play as a pitcher recently.
Manager Joe Girardi emphasized the importance of winning the three games against the Orioles, stating, "We need to win this series to set ourselves up well for the Blue Jays series."
With this win, the Yankees have demonstrated their ability to bounce back from adversity and their determination to secure victories. The team will look to carry this momentum into their upcoming games against the Blue Jays.
