Yankees eye 2026 redemption as Dodgers remain the team to beat
The New York Yankees are looking ahead to the 2026 season with renewed optimism. After a disappointing 2025 campaign, the team is banking on improved health from Giancarlo Stanton and a strong return from ace pitcher Gerrit Cole.
ESPN analyst Doug Greenberg ranks them second in World Series odds, just behind the Los Angeles Dodgers. The rivalry between the two franchises has sharpened in recent years, with the Dodgers leading in both spending and recent success.
Over the past five seasons, the Dodgers have dominated with two World Series wins (2020 and 2024). Their aggressive spending—including blockbuster deals for Shohei Ohtani (10 years, $700 million) and Yoshinobu Yamamoto (12 years, $325 million)—has set them apart. The Yankees, meanwhile, have focused on key trades and re-signings, such as acquiring Juan Soto in 2024 and extending his contract in 2025.
The contrast in ownership styles is clear. Hal Steinbrenner runs a more measured, professional organisation compared to his late father, George, who was known for lavish spending. Former Yankees pitcher Ron Guidry believes George would have matched the Dodgers' payroll to chase titles. But Hal has accepted a more disciplined approach, even if it means trailing in spending behind the Los Angeles Dodgers and Mets.
On the field, Aaron Judge remains a cornerstone. After another MVP-calibre season in 2025, expectations are high for his leadership in 2026. The Dodgers, however, still lead preseason odds, bolstered by their star-studded roster and recent championship pedigree. Media attention has also favoured them, thanks to Ohtani's global appeal and their 2024 title run, while the Yankees have struggled in the postseason despite strong regular-season performances.
The Yankees enter 2026 with confidence, relying on Judge's consistency and Cole's return to form. Their chances hinge on staying healthy and closing the gap on the Los Angeles Dodgers' dominance. For now, Los Angeles remains the team to beat, with deeper pockets and recent success on their side.
