Yankees dodge arbitration with Michael Pineda and Dustin Ackley, secure Lane Adams via waiver claims
Yankees Make Double Signing Ahead of 2016 Season
The New York Yankees have made a pair of moves ahead of the 2016 season, agreeing to one-year contracts with pitcher Michael Pineda and infielder Dustin Ackley.
The 26-year-old Pineda, who spent the 2014 season with the Yankees, returns to the team after a one-year absence. In his last season with the Yankees, Pineda made 27 starts, recording a 4.37 earned run average (ERA) and a 1.226 walks plus hits per inning pitched (WHIP). His win-loss record for the season was 12-10.
Pineda's departure from the team was due to a suspension for the use of a banned substance, but he has reportedly been reinstated and is now ready to rejoin the Yankees. The contract offered to Pineda is non-guaranteed, meaning it could be voided if he fails to meet certain performance benchmarks.
The Yankees also acquired Ackley from the Seattle Mariners in a trade before the trade deadline last season. In a combined 108 games with the Mariners and Yankees in the 2015 season, Ackley hit .231 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs, and 28 runs.
To make room for Ackley and Pineda on the roster, the Yankees designated infielder Ronald Torreyes for assignment. Torreyes, who was acquired by the Yankees earlier in the week in a trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers, spent the 2015 season primarily with the team's Triple-A affiliate, the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.
Lane Adams, a 28-year-old outfielder who spent all of the 2015 season with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, was claimed off of waivers by the Yankees from the Kansas City Royals on Friday. In a corresponding move, the Yankees designated Torreyes for assignment. In Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, Adams combined to hit .281 with 16 home runs, 62 RBIs, 72 runs, and 31 steals in 134 games.
However, it is worth noting that the search results do not provide information about who represented the Yankees before the designated arbitration round regarding Pineda and Ackley.
These moves come as the Yankees look to improve upon their 2015 season, in which they finished with a 87-75 record and missed out on the playoffs. With the addition of Pineda and Ackley, the team hopes to boost their pitching and infield depth, respectively. The Yankees' announcement about the contracts was made on Friday.
