After a tough loss to the Mets, the Yankees got a much-needed boost from the return of two-time batting champion DJ LeMahieu.

Literally and figuratively, he made his long-awaited return to the Bronx since August 25, 2024. LeMahieu's first multihit game of the season and his first home run in three games were telltale signs that he might have more to offer this season.

Despite his advanced age of 36, LeMahieu demonstrated that he's still got it. He looked sharp, both defensively and offensively, during the 3-2 loss on Saturday.

"He's got a little fire in him," said Clarke Schmidt, who let in two runs in six innings. "He looks moving well, like he's prepared himself. It's inspiring to see."

LeMahieu was activated from a calf strain this week and has come back hitting. In the third inning, he crushed a 94.8 mph fastball from Griffin Canning, sending it soaring over the short porch in right for his first home run since July 31, 2024.

LeMahieu's emotional response, pumping his fist as he rounded first base, was a testament to the importance of playing in Yankee Stadium.

"Feels great to play at Yankee Stadium again, in front of these amazing fans," said LeMahieu. "We're in the midst of a crucial series."

LeMahieu has struggled with numerous injuries, particularly foot and toe issues, in the past. Last season, he dealt with a right hip impingement, and this year, he sustained a calf strain during his spring debut.

However, LeMahieu's rehab and buildup have shown signs of success. In addition to the home run, he tallied a single through the middle, a groundout, and an impressive 106.6 mph bullet with the bases loaded, even though it was hit right to Juan Soto in right field.

"His at-bats have been fantastic in his first few outings here," manager Aaron Boone said. "He was outstanding today."

LeMahieu's return to form might be just what the Yankees need, particularly for their unsettled third base position and filling gaps with Jazz Chisholm Jr. out. A healthy LeMahieu could bring both defensive stability and offensive firepower to the team.

LeMahieu's comeback is encouraging, but the season is still long. If he can maintain his form and stay healthy, he could prove to be a valuable asset for the Yankees.

Regardless of LeMahieu's advanced age, his impressive performance in the 3-2 loss on Saturday showcased that he still has the skills to excel in MLB, especially with his key contributions as a two-time batting champion. With his return to the Yankees after a calf strain, he could potentially bring much-needed stability and offensive firepower to the team, given the unsettled third base position and the absence of Jazz Chisholm Jr.
