Yankees Rely on Stanton in Right Field as Judge Deals with Injury
The New York Yankees are holding onto their spot in the American League Wild Card race, but they've had their fair share of challenges recently. One such challenge is the injury to star outfielder Aaron Judge, who has been dealing with a flexor strain.
In his absence, Giancarlo Stanton has been asked to step up and play right field. Stanton, who was a Miami Marlin before joining the Yankees, has not played right field in back-to-back games since August 2-3, 2023. However, he returned to the position over the weekend against the Houston Astros.
Manager Aaron Boone was pleased with Stanton's performance in the outfield, commenting that he moved well. Stanton also handled himself well during the games, demonstrating that he is capable of filling in for Judge when needed.
Despite missing three games due to injury in mid-August 2025, Stanton played three straight games in right field before his brief absence. He returned to the position in one of two games against the Tampa Bay Rays on August 20, 2025.
Judge, meanwhile, is slowly making progress in his recovery. He has started throwing again, and his assessment of his throwing is "felt good. Normal throwing." The flexor strain is similar to a hamstring injury in terms of initial soreness after activity, but Judge has reported that it does not feel as bad as it did when he initially injured it.
The Yankees have struggled recently, with a record of 3-7 in their past 10 contests. However, they are still in postseason contention, and the team will need to rely on players like Stanton to help them stay afloat in the postseason race.
As the season continues, it will be interesting to see how Stanton performs in right field and whether Judge can make a full recovery from his injury. The Yankees will need both players at their best if they hope to make a deep run in the postseason.
