Yakutsk's Zvezdny microdistrict transforms from wasteland to thriving community
YAKUTIA.INFO. One of Yakutsk's most ambitious urban development projects—the Zvezdny microdistrict—continues to take shape. Just a few years ago, this area was an empty lot, but today it has transformed into a thriving residential hub where dreams of comfortable living are becoming a reality.
Since construction began, the Zvezdny microdistrict has made remarkable progress. To date, 17 apartment buildings have been completed, with six more currently under construction. Residents enjoy modern infrastructure, including a state-of-the-art 112 MW district heating plant—powerful enough to supply the entire neighborhood—and the Yuzhny water treatment facility. The social sphere is also expanding: Youth Sports School No. 10 has opened its doors to young athletes, while a new school and kindergarten are now being built.
The microdistrict is divided into three sectors. The first seven buildings in Sector A were completed and commissioned in 2022–2023, while Sector C saw the construction of another 10 buildings in 2024–2025.
Among those who have found a new home in Zvezdny is Vera Meltsayeva, who moved here in October 2025 from a dilapidated building in Yakutsk's 17th District. She has since settled in comfortably—finding a job nearby and enrolling her child in a local school.
"We used to live in far from ideal conditions," she shares. "We spent nearly 40 years in our old apartment, but over time, the building deteriorated—drafts, cold, flooding in the entrance. Now we live in warmth and beauty. We love our new microdistrict. The most important thing is that people here appreciate it and keep everything clean and orderly. Our apartment is wonderful—sunny side, great renovations, and a stunning view of the hills from the 7th floor. The whole family is happy and grateful."
RIA, the specialized development corporation, continues its systematic efforts to relocate residents from unsafe housing. Since construction began in Zvezdny, the company has rehoused occupants from 300 condemned apartments.
The microdistrict's development aligns with Yakutsk's master plan and Russia's National Infrastructure for Life Project, initiated by President Vladimir Putin. Spanning 68.5 hectares, the area will eventually feature 30 mid-rise apartment buildings (4–9 stories) and two block-style residential complexes, providing modern living conditions for nearly 11,000 people.
