Yakutsk's Eternal Flame relit after months of neglect and repairs
Yakutsk’s Eternal Flame memorial has been restored after months of disrepair. The monument, located in Fallen Fighters Square, faced repeated issues following a controversial renovation in 2025. Recent repairs have finally returned the flame to working order. The Eternal Flame stood without major problems for nearly 40 years before its 2025 overhaul. Region Service, a contractor with a mixed reputation, won the 1.9 million ruble renovation contract from the Central District Administration. The company had previously faced criticism for delays and poor-quality work on Yakutsk’s Ordzhonikidze Square.
Within months of the renovation, the flame’s gas supply was cut off, two cast-iron petals of its basin broke, and the gas pipe froze. Authorities briefly suggested vandalism as a possible cause but never confirmed it. The promised lighting system was also never installed.
Public frustration and media attention pushed Region Service to act. Under warranty obligations, the firm carried out repairs, completing the work shortly after the May holidays. The Eternal Flame now burns again after the latest fixes. The repairs were done at no extra cost, as Region Service fulfilled its warranty commitments. The memorial’s long-term stability will depend on whether further issues emerge.
