Yakutsk secures $5.3B loan to rebuild crumbling 17th District infrastructure

Yakutsk has secured a 5.3 billion ruble loan to upgrade its crumbling infrastructure in the 17th District. The funds, allocated by Russia’s Construction Minister Marat Khusnullin, will target power, water, and sewage systems in the Sports microdistrict. This move comes as thousands of residents continue to live in dangerous, neglected housing across the city.

The loan will help build 46 new apartment blocks, covering 329,000 square metres of living space. These developments aim to relocate people from 160 derelict buildings in the 17th District, one of Yakutsk’s most troubled areas. Despite this progress, around 1,300 emergency buildings still stand across the city, with only 80 emergency rooms and a 120-room hostel currently under construction.

The infrastructure loan marks a step toward improving living standards in Yakutsk’s worst-affected district. Once completed, the new apartment blocks will provide safer homes for those currently in emergency housing. However, thousands more residents still face uncertain futures in the city’s remaining neglected buildings.
