Yakutian Animation's Global Breakthrough: Insights from 'Soyuzmultfilm' Director

Boris Mashkovtsev, General Director of 'Soyuzmultfilm', has shared insights on how Yakutian animation can succeed globally. He stressed the importance of initial domestic success and understanding target audiences.

Mashkovtsev advised Yakutian studios to first prove their worth on the federal level. This involves defining target audiences and project formats. He compared the international animation scene to high-level sports, with a very high bar for success.

He suggested creating more abstract worlds without strong local markers for large projects aimed at external markets. However, he noted that exotic color can sometimes work. Understanding the target audience is crucial, influencing plot complexity, lexicon, and themes.

Mashkovtsev acknowledged Yakutian animation's potential and talent but emphasised the quality of execution as key. He advised starting with systematic work at festivals, monitoring selection and awards, and analysing competitors. He also mentioned that deals in the content market often take several years of contacts, pitchings, and building trust.

Boris Mashkovtsev's strategy for Yakutian animation's global breakthrough involves initial domestic success, understanding target audiences, and quality execution. With potential and talent recognised, the path to international markets is clear, though competitive.
