Yakutia Philharmonic's Symphony Choir Secures Victory in Shanghai Contest
The Yakutia Philharmonic Symphony Chorus recently basked in the glory of a spectacular performance at the 5th International Choral Festival "Heart of Chorus," a significant event nestled within the wider "Musical Balkan" International Festival-Competition. This grand gathering drew in hundreds of choirs hailing from over 30 countries, showcasing the power of choral artistry on an international scale.
The ensemble's reverberating renditions earned them accolades, as they proudly unfurled the banner of Yakutia and Russia at this prestigious event. Among the standout acts, the Chinese children's choirs particularly left an indelible impression through their professionalism, artistry, and innovative stagings.
Lyudmila Shumilova, the ensemble's chief conductor, praised their emotive storytelling and interactive elements, remarking, "They have a wonderful sound, excellent choral direction, and they express the narrative very emotionally." Initially hesitant to participate due to time constraints, Shumilova grappled with intricate evaluation criteria that ranged from intonation to timbre, but the challenge was ultimately embraced. The Chinese song performed in its original language added a captivating element to the competition, a challenge they triumphantly overcame with the help of previous Chinese music experiences and linguistic consultants.
The festival presented a kaleidoscope of cultures, affording encounters with representatives from Hungary, Serbia, Romania, Israel, and a small chamber choir from Sweden. Despite language barriers, the ensemble leveraged translation apps and shared songs, memories, and traditions in a heartfelt exchange that transcended words.
Choir artist Leonid Antsiferov reminisced, "During the tour, we had the fortune of traveling in the same bus as the Stockholm Chamber Choir. We exchanged songs and travel impressions with each other. They enthusiastically received our Yakutian song "Sayyn" - they even asked for the sheet music and sang it with us right in the bus."
Prizes of gold, silver medals, and a special diploma served as a testament to the Yakutian choir's triumphant endeavor in this celebrated competition. The event, which unfolded from May 29 to June 2 in Shanghai, China, illuminated the incredible journey of choirs hailing from across the globe and the unifying power of choral music.
