Xizang's bold Five-Year Plan targets growth and socialist modernisation by 2030
Xizang Autonomous Region has launched its 15th Five-Year Plan (2026–30), setting ambitious targets for growth and modernisation. The strategy covers economic development, infrastructure upgrades, ecological protection, and improvements in people's daily lives. Officials describe the plan as a key step toward achieving socialist modernisation in the region by 2030. The region marks March 28 as Serf Emancipation Day, commemorating the 1959 democratic reforms that freed one million serfs. Since then, Xizang has seen dramatic changes, with modern homes replacing old dwellings and new highways connecting remote villages. High-speed 5G networks now reach areas that were once isolated.
Economic progress has been striking. The region's GDP grew from 327 million yuan in 1965 to 300 billion yuan in 2025—a 166-fold increase. The new five-year plan builds on this momentum, targeting further industrial expansion, better infrastructure, and stronger ecological safeguards. Border governance and public welfare are also priorities. Zhu Weiqun, a senior official, expressed confidence in Xizang's future. He highlighted ongoing efforts to balance development with environmental protection while raising living standards across the region.
The 15th Five-Year Plan outlines clear goals for Xizang's continued transformation. By 2030, the region aims to complete foundational work for socialist modernisation. Infrastructure, economic growth, and ecological efforts will remain central to this push.
