Three individuals linked to the extremist Pegida group are under fire for a suspected xenophobic attack in Dresden's old town against a 16-year-old Afghan bystander. The trio, aged between 48 and 50, stand accused of causing grievous bodily harm and will be brought before the local court, according to the prosecutor's office.

The alleged incident took place during a Pegida demonstration in the heart of Dresden last April. The young victim was walking when he was caught up in the demonstration, tripping over and inadvertently approaching the three accused individuals. They are said to have launched a brutal assault, inflicting injuries such as a black eye and shoulder pain, among other physical harm.

Originated in Dresden back in 2014, Pegida (Patriotische Europäer gegen die Islamisierung des Abendlandes) is recognized by the Saxon Office for the Protection of the Constitution as a far-right group with anti-Islam and anti-foreigner beliefs. The group acts as a "connective tissue" within the wider far-right scene and has seen its popularity dwindle in recent times.

Reports claim that the teenager was trying to cross the demonstration via a pedestrian crossing when he was shoved by an unknown attendee. This action led him towards the three accused individuals. The prosecutor's office stated that the suspects acted with clear xenophobic intent. They have yet to comment on the accusations.

Pegida's history dates back to 2014, when Lutz Bachmann created the group amidst increased concern over immigration and Islam in Europe. At its peak during the 2015 refugee crisis, Pegida drew huge crowds to its demonstrations. Although its influence has diminished, Pegida's far-right ideology lives on, inspiring offshoots such as Pegida UK and fueling anti-immigrant sentiments within various European movements [2][3].

The case against the three Pegida participants is notable not just for the alleged violence involved, but also as a stark reminder of the xenophobic attitudes that persist within certain factions within Europe.

The Commission, in light of the Pegida incident of April 2024, has been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation, as the case serves as a stark reminder of the need for policies addressing xenophobia and discrimination in Europe.

The ongoing trial of three individuals from Pegida over a xenophobic attack in Dresden's old town has raised questions about the role of politics, particularly in shaping far-right movements such as Pegida, and the impact of such groups on general-news and crime-and-justice sectors.
