Schlager Leaves RB Summer After Four Years Without a Fee - Xaver Schlager leaves RB Leipzig after four Bundesliga seasons

Xaver Schlager will depart RB Leipzig this summer after four seasons with the club. His contract expires at the end of June, and he will leave on a free transfer. The Austrian midfielder joined from VfL Wolfsburg in 2022 but had already been part of Leipzig's squad since 2020 on loan.

Schlager's time at Leipzig included notable success. He helped the team win the 2023 DFB-Pokal and the Supercup that same year. Over his spell with the club, he made 97 Bundesliga appearances and scored four goals.

RB Leipzig had hoped to retain the 31-year-old. Sporting director Marcel Schäfer held multiple discussions with Schlager about extending his stay, describing the talks as open and respectful. The club made genuine efforts to keep him, but Schlager chose to seek a new challenge elsewhere.

His decision was not driven by dissatisfaction with Leipzig. Instead, he cited a desire for a fresh start after several years in the Bundesliga. While his next destination remains unconfirmed, reports have linked him with interest from Juventus.

Before Leipzig, Schlager spent four seasons at Wolfsburg, where he first established himself in Germany's top flight. His total Bundesliga appearances across both clubs now approach around 120 matches.

Schlager's exit marks the end of a productive chapter at RB Leipzig. The club loses an experienced midfielder who contributed to recent trophy wins. His next move will be closely watched, with a potential switch to Serie A among the possibilities.
