Hey there!
Würzburg appoints a new city leader - Würzburg elects its new city leader
It's time to elect a new Mayor for the vibrant city of Würzburg, Bavaria! While the regular municipal election is slated for next year, an early one is being held this Sunday due to the departure of incumbent Mayor Christian Schuchardt (CDU) to the German City Council. Approximately 100,000 citizens are expected to cast their votes.
Runoff race in two weeks
With around 131,000 inhabitants, the mayor will oversee approximately 3,200 employees. If no candidate secures more than half of the valid votes on Sunday, a runoff election will occur on May 18.
Last year, voter turnout reached 53.61 percent. The election results are expected to be declared by around 9:00 PM.
A new election rhythm
In normal circumstances, the mayoral election would be held in 2026 along with the city council election. However, with Schuchardt's early transition, only the new city council will be elected in March next year. The new mayor will therefore remain in office until 2032, at which point both elections will be held together again.
Favorites and underdogs
The CSU is fielding 49-year-old Judith Roth-Jörg for Sunday's race. As the third mayor and head of the department for education, school, and sports, Roth-Jörg stands a strong chance of taking over from Schuchardt.
Nevertheless, Green Party politician Martin Heilig (49, Alliance 90/The Greens) also harbors ambitions for the post. Known for its youthful population and environmental focus, Würzburg might lean towards Heilig. Heilig currently serves as the second mayor of the Main city.
Eva von Vietinghoff-Scheel is running for the SPD. The 45-year-old administrative lawyer previously held a position as chairperson of a municipal enterprise in the Würzburg district. Independent candidate Claudia Stamm (54) is also in the running, having gathered the necessary signatures to join the race without backing from a party.
Farewell after over a decade in office
Schuchardt has served as Mayor since 2014. In 2020, he comfortably defeated his challenger, Martin Heilig, with nearly 52 percent of the votes. Schuchardt's term officially concludes on June 30.
