Defensive changes were made by BVB U23 coach Mike Tullberg, with Patrick Göbel and the ill Bennedikt Wüstenhagen being replaced by Ismael Mansaray and Ayman Azhil. The squad showed signs of personnel challenges, with a thin bench.

The match began with an early setback for BVB U23, as an individual defensive error by Mansaray allowed Wuppertaler's Lirim Jashari to score in the 4th minute. However, the team responded swiftly, with Michael Eberwein equalizing the score in the 13th minute, following an assist from Ousmane Diallo.

Key moments in the game included the early defensive lapse by BVB U23 and their quick attacking response. Amin Bouzraa was active throughout the game, forcing BVB keeper Silas Ostrzinski into a save in the 11th minute. WSV's Bouzraa also scored an equalizing goal in the 55th minute, going on a solo run and scoring to the right bottom corner, making it 2-2.
