Wrexham initiates £1m stadium renovation, marking ongoing improvements under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's leadership ahead of Championship competition.
Wrexham Initiates Construction of New Pitch at SToK Cae Ras Stadium
Following their historic third consecutive promotion, Wrexham AFC has announced the commencement of a significant overhaul of their home turf at the SToK Cae Ras stadium. This marks the Red Dragons' return to the Championship after a 43-year absence.
To prepare for their upcoming campaign, the pitch at the stadium has been completely replaced. The old surface, including the grass, irrigation system, and soil, has been removed. In its place, Wrexham is installing a brand-new stitch pitch with under-soil heating and improved drainage systems. The estimated cost of this upgrade is around £1 million.
Additional work includes the installation of new irrigation pumps, tanks, and pipework, as well as a gravel layer. These improvements aim to create a state-of-the-art, UEFA-compliant facility suitable for both first-team home matches and other sports games. New LED boards are also being installed in front of three of the four stands.
Meanwhile, the Kop stand, while not immediately undergoing changes for next season, is scheduled for an extensive renovation by 2026. Plans for the Kop include a new 5,500-seater stand with safe-standing areas and hospitality suites, designed by acclaimed architects Populous. The revamped Kop is expected to amplify supporter noise on the pitch, and will feature facilities for players and officials.
The Kop's design pays homage to Wrexham's distinctive red brick architecture, with striking decorations, including two Welsh dragons in each top corner. However, some fan petitions have emerged to alter one aspect of the design due to its resemblance to the England flag.
This massive stadium overhaul comes after a £14.3 million investment in March, which has boosted Wrexham's projects leading into the summer. The exact allocation of this investment towards the stadium upgrades remains unconfirmed.
Under the leadership of manager Phil Parkinson, Wrexham is bracing for a second-tier campaign after achieving back-to-back-to-back promotions under the ownership of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The Hollywood stars have significantly invested in the club since 2021, notably contributing to their recent successes.
