Southampton Secure Dramatic 2-1 Victory Over Wrexham in Championship Opener

In an exhilarating start to the 2025 Championship season, Southampton overturned a 22nd-minute deficit against Wrexham to secure a 2-1 victory at St Mary's Stadium.

The match began with Wrexham taking an early lead through a penalty scored by Josh Windass, following a foul on Kieffer Moore. However, Southampton displayed resilience and attacking persistence under young manager Will Still, eventually turning the game around in the closing stages.

Substitute Ryan Manning was the architect of Southampton's comeback, scoring a superb free-kick in the 90th minute and providing the assist for Jack Stephens' winning goal in the sixth minute of added time. Stephens' goal was his second in six years and came after he had recently signed a new three-year contract and captained the side.

Gavin Bazunu, Southampton's goalkeeper, made a crucial save in a one-on-one situation against Ryan Hardie, preventing a potential second Wrexham goal and helping Southampton stay in the game. Kieffer Moore, who won the penalty for Wrexham's opener, had to leave the game injured while shooting.

Shay Charles was praised for his overall play, including setting up the winning goal with a diagonal ball and appearing influential throughout. Jack Stephens also delivered a solid performance, capped off by his dramatic winning goal.

In the second half, Southampton penned Wrexham back, limiting their chances and keeping them to only one shot on target. Conor Coady made two vital blocks for Wrexham before half-time.

Southampton's win was significant, as they had won just one of their last 11 opening fixtures of a league campaign before this match. The victory sets a positive tone for their Championship campaign, with late-game character and key individual contributions, particularly from substitute Ryan Manning and captain Jack Stephens.

Meanwhile, Charlton Athletic secured a 1-0 win over Watford thanks to a late goal by Jack Stephens in the fourth minute of additional time. The match saw Charlton Athletic create 1.24 expected goals (xG) compared to Watford's 0.64, but Watford had the majority of possession.

Elsewhere, Coventry City played out a 0-0 draw at home to Hull City. The only scorers for Coventry City were Liam Kitching, Bobby Thomas, and Jack Rudoni. Substitute Haji Wright failed to test Ivor Pandur in the opposition goal.

The opening fixtures of the 2025 Championship season have provided an exciting start, with Southampton's dramatic victory over Wrexham being a standout moment. The season promises to be full of thrilling matches and intense competition.

  1. The triumph over Wrexham suggests Southampton's European-leagues aspirations could be on track this season, given their past struggles in opening games.
  2. Ryan Manning's 90th-minute goal in the Premier-league reminiscent fashion may hint at an attacking edge in Southampton's style of play this season, as they strive for success in the Championship.
