In a powerful statement released by Save the Children, over 20 major aid agencies working in Gaza have called on world leaders to intensify efforts to end Israel's war on Gaza ahead of next week's U.N. General Assembly. The groups described the current situation as a test of humanity, expressing concern that they are failing the people of Gaza, the hostages, and their own collective moral imperative.

The call to action comes a day after the U.N.-appointed commission of human rights experts concluded that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. The military campaign, aimed at the destruction of the Palestinian people, according to the commission, has led to countless Palestinians losing their lives and limbs in Israeli bombardments.

Daily strikes on Gaza City, as evidenced by the aid groups, highlight the severity of the situation. Families in Gaza are reportedly eating animal food to survive and boiling leaves as a meal for their children, with the conditions faced by civilians worsening.

The groups accused world leaders of failing to act, and of ignoring facts and casting aside testimony. They warned that further inaction would lead to more loss of life in Gaza, and that the current inaction creates a dangerous precedent.

Israel, however, has accused the Palestinian resistance organization Hamas of using civilians as human shields. The country's government insists that its war targets Hamas, not civilians. Nevertheless, Israel has been condemned by the commission of human rights experts for its actions, with the report being described as scandalous.

The aid groups, which include Doctors Without Borders, Care International, the Norwegian Refugee Council, and Oxfam International, urged world leaders to use every available political, economic, and legal tool at their disposal to intervene. President Donald Trump, who began his second term on January 20, 2025, has also exerted international pressure on Israel to end violence in the Gaza Strip, calling for Hamas to immediately release all hostages to help end the humanitarian crisis.

The groups believe that history will judge this moment as a test of humanity. They warned that the current inaction creates a dangerous precedent, and that the international community has ignored facts and eyewitness accounts. The organizations stated that U.N. member states were treating their obligations under international law as optional, and expressed hope that world leaders will take immediate action to end the crisis in Gaza.
