Tempo, Elegance, Courage: The Best Sports Photos - World Sports Photography Awards reveal the raw emotion behind iconic moments

This year’s World Sports Photography Awards has showcased breathtaking moments from across the globe. The winning images capture drama, skill, and raw emotion in sports—from cycling triumphs to high-stakes clashes on ice and turf. Each photograph tells a story beyond the action itself.

Among the standout works, Pauline Ferrand-Prévot’s collapse after her Tour de France Femmes victory and Enzo Cei’s harrowing shot of a fallen horse in the Palio di Siena highlight the intensity of competition. Other striking entries include a shadowy illusion in tennis and a goaltender’s frozen split-second in hockey.

One of the most talked-about images came from the Tour de France Femmes 2025, where Pauline Ferrand-Prévot’s exhaustion was captured mid-collapse. Surrounded by a crush of photographers, her body gave way the moment she crossed the finish line. The shot, raw and unfiltered, became an instant symbol of athletic sacrifice.

In Italy, Enzo Cei’s lens froze a tragic moment during the Palio di Siena on July 9, 2004. His photograph shows the horse from contrada Valdimontone crashing to the cobblestones of Piazza del Campo. The image remains one of the most dramatic in the history of the race, illustrating both the danger and spectacle of the event. Halfway across the world, Beatriz Ryder da Costa braved the waters of the Solomon Islands to capture her silver-winning shot. Her photograph of towering waves was taken despite her fear of saltwater crocodiles lurking nearby. The composition earned praise for its power and the risk behind it. At the Australian Open, Edgar Su’s clever framing turned Carlos Alcaraz’s routine return into something surreal. The Spanish player’s shadow stretches across the court, appearing as if a second player has joined him in a doubles match. The playful trick of light added a creative twist to tennis photography. In Western Australia, an aerial shot documented swimmers battling the 20-kilometre Geo Bay Cool Water Classic. The vast expanse of water and the scattered competitors emphasised the endurance required for open-water racing. Meanwhile, Sophia Sandurskaya delivered a masterclass in hockey composition with her Kontinental Hockey League entry. Her still life captures a face-off in progress, the goaltender frozen mid-motion as he smothers the puck. The precision of the players’ stances and the tension of the moment stand out. Over in Saudi Arabia, a Dakar Rally car roared past a group of spectators brewing tea in the desert. The contrast between the high-speed vehicle kicking up dust and the calm, traditional scene created a striking visual narrative. Finally, Kyle Zedaker offered a fresh perspective on American football by mounting his camera behind a player’s face mask. The resulting image pulls viewers onto the field, immersing them in the moment as the team charges forward. The diversity of subjects—from cycling and cricket to hockey and rally racing—showcases how sports photography can turn fleeting seconds into lasting art.

The awarded photographs will now tour in exhibitions worldwide, bringing these powerful moments to a broader audience. Each image not only documents a split second of competition but also reveals the stories behind them—whether it’s fear, exhaustion, or sheer creativity. The collection serves as a reminder of how sports unite emotion, skill, and visual storytelling in unexpected ways.
