Why Hansi Flick? The Extraordinary Coach Leaves Competitors in the Dust
World-Renowned Trainer Hansi Flick remains Connected to Global Circles
The popular football magazine "Kicker" organizes a vote and 216 Bundesliga professionals participate. They weigh in on various topics, including the best coach in the game right now. The results are intriguing, even though the Champions League winner isn't sitting on the throne.
ntv.de has been aware for some time now: Once Hansi Flick stepped onto the scene with FC Barcelona, the 60-year-old has been seen as a dominant coach. His extraordinary season 2020 with FC Bayern propelled him into these realms. The team under his leadership won the triple of the championship, cup, and Champions League.
Now the award is almost poised to further bolster his reputation. In a large "Kicker" survey, in which 216 Bundesliga professionals took part, Flick was voted the current best coach in the world. Nearly a third of the voters made their choice for the former national coach (31.9%), who had breathed life into Barcelona, creating an electrifying team that rivals PSG (more on that later).
Flick won three titles in his inaugural season with the Catalans. He claimed the championship, the Copa del Rey, and became Supercup winner. In the Champions League, he came close, giving an unforgettable performance in two incredible semifinal matches against Inter Milan. His unrelenting offensive pressing football swept across Europe. He forged another super team, much like he did in 2020 with FC Bayern, winning it all.
Football Paris St. Germain Refuses to Let Inter Milan Join the Final Flick tops the rankings with a commanding lead. In second place is Luis Enrique, who shouldn't come as a surprise. The Spaniard is crafting an extraordinary success story and achieved something historic just a few days prior. He secured the first-ever Champions League title for his club, Paris St. Germain. And not only that, but the result was surprising in more ways than one: Inter Milan was defeated 5:0, a result unseen before. Luis Enrique received 16.7% of the votes in the traditional player survey.
Flick Battles Guardiola for the Lead
Flick charts a clear path at the top. In second place is Xabi Alonso (11.6%), who will be leaving Bayer Leverkusen this summer to take over Real Madrid. Despite the disappointing season the team didn't meet the expectations of the previous season, the appreciation of his work remains strong. There's an unexpected name in fourth place: Pep Guardiola (9.3%), despite the dismal season Manchester City experienced, measured by their own standards. City's Champions League qualification was only secured in the final stages. Guardiola frequently spoke candidly, including about his own performance and found himself "good enough."
Football Slot Heads the Pack Instead of the Mockery The Dutchman Arne Slot finishes in fifth place, receiving 8.8% of the votes. Perhaps he received too low of a ranking in the overall scheme of things. In his first year after Jürgen Klopp, he guided Liverpool FC to the championship with a significant lead. The only blemish – a round of 16 exit in the Champions League against Paris St. Germain. But then, at least, a little defiance came through: PSG triumphed in the end.
The "Kicker" also cast votes on other topics. Among them was who is the best player in the world. The results were readily apparent. Over half of the voting Bundesliga professionals named Lamine Yamal (53.7%). In second place, Ousmane Dembélé was selected, receiving 6.9% of the votes. With 4.2%, Florian Wirtz is also on the list between France's star striker Kylian Mbappé and Barcelona's Raphinha.
