Armand Duplantis Breaks Pole Vault World Record for the 13th Time

Armand "Mondo" Duplantis made history on August 12, 2025, at the Istvan Gyulai Memorial meet in Budapest, Hungary, by setting a new world record in pole vaulting. The Swedish athlete cleared 6.29 meters, surpassing his previous record set in June 2025 in Stockholm by one centimeter.

The record-breaking jump took place during the Hungarian Grand Prix, a significant event in the World Athletics series. Greece's Emmanouil Karalis bowed out of the competition, allowing Duplantis to attempt another record-breaking jump.

This is not the first time Duplantis has made waves in the world of pole vaulting. In 2024, he set a world record of 6.25 meters at the Paris Olympics, becoming the first back-to-back Olympic pole vault champion since Bob Richards in the 1950s. He also set both Olympic and world records during that meet.

Duplantis has been named a "Star Athlete" for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, which is scheduled for Sept. 11-13, 2026, in Budapest. The championship will feature a $10 million prize pool, with $150,000 for each gold medalist across 26 individual events and two relays.

Duplantis has expressed his desire to break the world record in front of a packed crowd during the World Athletics Ultimate Championship. He will compete at the event alongside other high-profile competitors, helping to promote the richest event in the sport's history.

Duplantis will next compete at the Silesia Diamond League, where he also set a world record last year. He has now pushed the pole vault world record 15 centimeters beyond the previous record set by Sergey Bubka. Duplantis has referred to Bubka as "mythological."
