Estonia Slips Three Spots in the World Happiness Rankings, While Finland Remains on Top 🇫🇮

After securing the 31st spot in the World Happiness Report 2023, we witness Estonia dropping three places to stand at rank 34 in the 2024 publication. Finland has retained its victorious position as the happiest nation for the seventh consecutive year.

The sunlight-drenched lands of Finland outshine Denmark, Iceland, Sweden, and Israel in this joyous competition. Conversely, the unhappiest countries on the list this year are Afghanistan, Lebanon, Lesotho, and Sierra Leone. Lithuania and Latvia ranked 19th and 46th, respectively.

Life Evaluations and Generational Differences

The survey's rankings can differ substantially across age groups.

Analysts at the United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network, who compiled the report, point out that this disparity is quite apparent in certain regions, such as the United States and Canada, where older people often have a higher ranking, up to 50 places higher than those under 30. In contrast, Central and Eastern Europe sees the reverse trend, with the young holding rankings more than 40 places higher than their elder counterparts.

The World Happiness Index, powered by data from the Gallup World Poll, depends on the measurement of subjective well-being and factors in three main indicators: life evaluations, positive emotions, and negative emotions. The rankings primarily focus on life evaluations as a more reliable gauge of people's quality of life.

Additional Insights

  1. The Happy City Index 2024, while not specifically examining happiness by age group, places Aarhus, Denmark, as the happiest city worldwide, reflecting potentially positive results for both young and old populations.
  2. The 2024 World Happiness Report principally examines country-level happiness factors such as GDP per capita, life expectancy, social support, freedom to make choices, generosity, and perceptions of corruption. It does not offer detailed insights into age-specific differences in happiness.
  3. Generally, high overall happiness is associated with robust social safety nets, quality education, and healthcare systems, benefiting both younger and older populations. However, while younger individuals tend to focus on factors like opportunities and social connections, older people prioritize healthcare and financial stability. More detailed surveys and analyses would be required to gain a profound understanding of how happiness fluctuates based on age.
