World News: Global Outrage and Calls for Accountability Following Al Jazeera Journalist Deaths in Gaza Conflict
In a series of events that have sparked global outrage, the Israeli military carried out a strike in Gaza City on August 10, 2025, which resulted in the tragic death of six journalists, including five Al Jazeera staff members.
The Al Jazeera Media Network condemned the killing of its journalists as a targeted assassination by Israeli forces and a blatant attack on press freedom. Among the dead were Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Moamen Aliwa, and Mohammed Noufal. A sixth journalist, Mohammad al-Khaldi, a local freelance reporter, was also reported killed in the air attack.
The drone attack occurred late on Sunday near a tent for journalists outside the main gate of Gaza City's al-Shifa Hospital. The European Union's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, strongly condemned the killings, as did the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), Reporters Without Borders (RSF), and the National Press Club.
UN experts viewed these killings as deliberate attempts to silence critical reporting on the conflict and potential war crimes. They highlighted profound concern over the deliberate targeting of media personnel, describing the killing of four Al Jazeera journalists, including correspondent Anas Al-Sharif, as an attempt to silence coverage of genocide and starvation in Gaza.
Human Rights Watch strongly condemned the targeted killings of Palestinian journalists in Gaza, underscoring the unimaginable peril faced by Palestinian journalists and the Israeli military's disregard for civilian life. The Palestinian mission to the United Nations accused Israel of "deliberately assassinating" al-Sharif and Qreiqeh.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and other human rights groups label these attacks as war crimes under international law, emphasizing the pattern of targeting journalists is a systematic effort to cover up Israel’s actions in Gaza. Appeals have been made to the global community to recognize and respond to these deadly assaults on press freedom and ensure journalists can work without fear of assassination.
The international community, including the UN, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the killings, urging all parties in conflict zones to honor their obligations under international law to protect reporters and ensure they can carry out their work safely. Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesman Esmail Baghaei called on the world to hold Israel accountable for the killings, while Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani strongly criticised Israel over the killings.
This tragic event has underscored the urgent need for protection of journalists in conflict zones and the importance of upholding press freedom as a fundamental human right.
