In the midst of ongoing humanitarian crises around the world, Caritas Internationalis, a leading global humanitarian organisation, has expressed grave concern over the increasing attacks on aid workers in conflict zones.

The organisation, with extensive experience in the risks faced by frontline emergency responders, has reported a distressing trend. In the first five months of 2025 alone, 128 people, including aid workers, were killed in 17 countries. The hardest-hit nation was Niger, where the majority of these tragedies occurred.

This unsettling statistic follows a similar pattern observed in 2024, when over 380 aid workers were killed in 20 countries while carrying out their missions.

Recognising the intrinsic dignity and value of every human life, Caritas Internationalis has called on governments to tackle the impunity for attacks on civilians and humanitarian aid workers. The organisation insists that the memory of fallen aid workers compels them not only to honour them but to act.

In this regard, Caritas Internationalis has reaffirmed its commitment to amplify the voices of religious leaders and people of faith appalled by the atrocities in Gaza, Sudan, South Sudan, Ukraine, Myanmar, and other conflict zones.

The organisation also highlighted the crucial role of the local Church in providing aid and protection in many countries where all other agencies have withdrawn. This underscores the resilience and commitment of the Church in its humanitarian efforts.

On a poignant note, Caritas Internationalis recalled the lives of Viola Al Amash, Issam Abedrabbo of Caritas Jerusalem, and other Caritas colleagues who died in Mariupol, Ukraine, and Niger.

The UN General Assembly designated August 19th as World Humanitarian Day five years after a bomb attack on Canal Hotel in Baghdad, Iraq, killed 22 humanitarian aid workers. Caritas Internationalis reaffirmed that World Humanitarian Day is a day to remember, mourn, and pray, but also to demand the protection of aid workers.

Caritas Internationalis calls on those with the power to end violence worldwide to do so. The organisation joins humanitarian agencies in commemorating those who have lost their lives in delivering life-saving aid amid humanitarian crises.

World Humanitarian Day, globally observed on August 19th, serves as a stark reminder of the sacrifices made by aid workers and the urgent need for their protection. It is a day to remember, honour, and act.
