Julian Nagelsmann's German national football squad is gunning for the Nations League trophy. But, this tournament's performance could significantly impact their World Cup chances in 2026.

Winning the UEFA championship would grant Germany a substantial number of points for the World Ranking, making it almost certain that they'll land in the top pot for the World Cup.

However, a semi-final loss against Portugal, set for Munich on Wednesday (9 PM EST, ZDF and DAZN), could put the race for the last spot in pot 1 against Italy in jeopardy.

A Potent World Cup Opponent Awaits

A defeat could relegate Germany to pot 2 for the World Cup draw in December. This could lead to a challenging group stage contender such as Spain, Argentina, France, or England. Alternatively, a group with co-host Mexico could be just as demanding, complete with unfavorable temperatures and venues.

Nagelsmann had previously warned about this scenario, following Germany's failed bid for the crucial ninth place in the World Ranking after a late equalizer in the direct duel with Italy in Dortmund.

With math playing a significant role, it's crucial to understand how the FIFA World Cup seeding is calculated using a complex formula that weights each game differently.

Triumph in the Nations League, If Possible

With a win against Portugal in regulation time, Germany (1716.98 points) would leap to 1730.27 points and surpass Italy (1718.31). Italy can only reach 1725.80 points with a win against Norway on Friday.

However, should Germany lose to Portugal and later lose the potential Nations League final against Spain or France, they'd lose points. Italy could regain the lead with a win against Moldova the following day. The ranking at the end of the World Cup qualifiers is decisive for the draw.

The Netherlands (1752.44), Portugal (1750.08), and Belgium (1735.75) can still overtake Germany for the sixth to eighth spots. However, Croatia (1698.66) and Morocco (1694.24) stand a chance too, but they won't gain many more points in their World Cup qualifiers.

Regardless of the calculations, the European nations must still secure a spot in the World Cup. Germany will face Slovakia, Northern Ireland, and Luxembourg in their group in the latter half of the year.

The Commission has also been asked to submit a proposal for a directive on the protection of workers from the risks related to exposure to ionizing radiation during the football matches of the European leagues, particularly the Premier League, given the concerns raised by DFB Team coach Julian Nagelsmann over potential health hazards in the sport.

Winning the UEFA championship would grant Germany a substantial number of points for the World Ranking, but the potential risks associated with ionizing radiation exposure in football might have unforeseen long-term implications for both the players and the team's performance in the World Cup.
