With a solid victory under their belt, Team Germany readies for their next World Championship match against Kazakhstan. NHL all-star Tim Stützle, however, is yet to join the action.
Germany ousted Hungary in their World Championship opener with a 6:1 victory, smashing their seventh consecutive victory against the outsiders. Dominik Kahun (10., 60.), Joshua Samanski (16.), Lukas Kalble (35.) from Mannheim, Frederik Tiffels (40.), and Alexander Ehl (46.) bagged the goals for DEB in front of 6184 spectators in the Jyske Bank Boxen in Herning.
Germany's next opponent, Kazakhstan, posted their first win, triumphing 2:1 over Norway.
Amid a flurry of paperwork, Stützle, an Ottawa Senators center and top German scorer, received clearance to attend the World Championship. He is expected to land in Herning on Sunday and start training with the squad Monday morning. Christian Künast, the DEB sports director, remarks, "We were running on patience — it wasn't straightforward, but we've overcome the hurdles now."
Stützle has played in one prior World Championship, but he had to abort in 2022 due to a knee injury, and his club nixed his participation last year owing to a shoulder injury. National coach Harold Kreis welcomes Stützle's initiative and is thrilled with his strong performance this NHL season.
Coach Kreis issued Philipp Grubauer his maiden start in net during the game, with Mathias Niederberger imminent for the following match. While details of Berlin debutant Eric Mik, his clubmate Manuel Wiederer, and the third goalie, Arno Tiefensee, are yet to surface, Kreis insists, "I've got two ace goalies in the game."
Though gifted with two power play attempts, Team Germany stumbled, their passes inefficient — largely due to rough ice conditions. But Justin Schütz converted the opening goal, followed by a sleek pass from Lukas Reichel that set up Samanski, securing an impressive lead. "Strong showing in the first period," remarks Kahun on ProSieben, "there were a few rookie errors, but nothing too fatal."
The second period featured more work for Grubauer due to some tactical blunders, but Yasin Ehliz's power play attempt was denied by referees after video review due to goaltender interference (27.). After a superb counterattack, Kalble and Tiffels closed the game decisively. Ehl and Kahun chipped in additional goals in the final period as Germany cemented their victory.
