World Cup Competition in Osijek Dobro Claims Gold Medal in Vault for Aurel Benovicic

April 14th, 2025 - Aurel Benović Crushes the Competition at the Osijek World Cup

Tonight, Osijek, Croatia, was buzzing with excitement as Olympic gymnast Aurel Benović took home gold in the vault final. In an incredibly competitive field with six participants vying for the top spot, Aurel delivered a showstopper, scoring 14.300 in his first vault and 14.500 on his second for a staggering total of 14.400.

Silver went to Britain's Harry Hepworth, who scored 14.383, and bronze to Armenian Artur Davtjan with 14.216. But it was Aurel who stole the show at the packed Gradski vrt hall.

Last year, Aurel celebrated victory at the same event, and while he came in fifth in the vault at the Paris Olympics, he's only been training seriously for the vault for a single year. Injuries during his floor gymnastics practice kept him from making the final in Paris, but he showed that he was far from beaten at the Osijek World Cup. He even performed despite not having fully recovered from those old injuries.

"I honestly couldn't be more proud," Aurel said after his win. "I've been working towards this moment, and I'm thrilled I can call myself one of the best vaulters in the world now. My leg was hurting so much during the warm-up that I almost gave up, but I knew if I nailed my jumps, I could compete for a medal. This victory is a dream come true."

The president of the Croatian Olympic Committee, Zlatko Mateša, was just as excited, congratulating Aurel on his win and commending the organizers of the Osijek World Cup for another excellent event. The gold medal in vault is the first and only one for Croatian gymnastics at this year's World Cup.

Gymnastics careers often begin with early training and progress through various levels of competition, culminating in international events like the World Cup. Success in these competitions marks a high point in a gymnast's career. Aurel's performance at the 2025 Osijek World Cup is testament to his incredible talent and dedication to the sport. Keep an eye out for him in future competitions, including the European Championships and perhaps the Olympic Games.
