World-class runner Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone holds the global record for the 400m hurdles - wonder how that's possible?
In the thrilling final of the World Championships in Tokyo, American hurdler Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone ran a time of 47.78 in the 400m flat, securing her second place finish. This was a significant improvement from her semifinal performance, where she clocked 48.29.
In the semifinals, McLaughlin adopted a cautious strategy, with a slow start of 11.98 at 100m and 23.43 at 200m. However, in the final, she accelerated quickly, recording a time of 11.71 at 100m and 22.95 at 200m. Despite starting faster in the final, McLaughlin struggled in the second half of the race and could not maintain the pace set in the initial stages.
Meanwhile, Dominican Republic's Marileidy Paulino claimed the silver medal with a time of 47.98, the third-fastest time in history. Paulino has better splits than McLaughlin on the second and third 100m of the race, indicating her potential to break the world record in the sprints.
Paulino expressed her confidence in breaking the world record, stating, "I now think I can break the world record." The current world record for the 400m flat is 47.60, set by East Germany's Marita Koch in 1985. Koch has faster times than McLaughlin in the 100m (10.83) and the 200m (21.71).
McLaughlin, who has competed in 17 races on the 400m flat, excluding relays, and her coach, Bob Kersee, now have a few months to consider their strategy for approaching the world record. Paulino, on the other hand, plans to use a strong start and maintain high speed in the final meters to break the world record in the sprints.
Despite falling short of the world record, McLaughlin's time in the final, 47.78, is the second-fastest time in her career. This performance solidifies her position as one of the world's top hurdlers and sets the stage for an exciting race towards the world record in the upcoming months.
