Leon Marchand Wins Gold in 400m Individual Medley at World Aquatics Championships

Leon Marchand, the French swimmer, overcame a tense start and personal concerns to secure a gold medal in the 400m individual medley at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore.

In the qualifying round, Marchand advanced to the final with the seventh-best time of 4:10.39. Despite admitting to feeling tense and not fully relaxed during the first 200m of the race, he managed to qualify for the final.

In the final, starting from lane 2 (which corresponded to his seventh seed), Marchand delivered a commanding performance, winning the race with a time of 4:04.73. His victory was a clear margin ahead of Japan's Matsushita Tomoyuki (4:08.32) and Ilia Borodin (4:09.16).

This gold medal win marks a golden double for Marchand at the championships, having earlier set a world record and won the 200m individual medley.

Meanwhile, the French relay team, consisting of Yohann Ndoye-Brouard, Clement Secchi, and Maxime Grousset, will be participating in the final of the men's 4x100m medley relay, scheduled for 14:29 CET.

In another development, the Chinese and the Australian teams were unexpectedly eliminated from the relay competition.

The final of the 400m individual medley, in which Marchand will not be participating due to his relay duties, is scheduled for 13:59 CET. Marchand had expressed concerns about starting from lane 1, stating that it would make race management more challenging and difficult to hide. However, an update at 12:35 PM confirmed that he will indeed start from lane 1 in the final.
