Title: Fighting Goodyear's Closure Plan: Working Group to Discuss Fürstenwalde Site's Future in Early 2024

In the face of Goodyear's closure announcement for their Fürstenwalde tire manufacturing site, Economics Minister Jörg Steinbach (SPD) has established a working group to explore every potential solution between January 2024 and the end of the year. The group aims to leave no stone unturned in an effort to reverse the company's decision and preserve the livelihoods of the 930 workers at the site, located in East Brandenburg's Oder-Spree district.

While Steinbach acknowledged that miracles aren't likely at this stage, his focus remains unwavering. The site analysis initiated by the working group will include input from employer representatives, the Ministry of Economic Affairs, and the Mining, Chemical and Energy Industrial Union (IG BCE).

Goodyear's decision to terminate traditional tire production by the end of 2027 brings the anticipated loss of 750 jobs. Crucially, however, the company has agreed to delay any initial personnel adjustments till the first quarter of 2025, thereby granting the working group's discussions ample scope for dialogue on the site's future.

Concurrently, Goodyear is actively collaborating with Ministry representatives and social partners to discuss the fallout of their closure plans and job cuts. The company's spokesperson shared that Goodyear would also be holding in-depth talks with Ministry officials to provide context surrounding their decision-making process.

The Rubber Tire Industry's Challenge in Germany

The tire manufacturer isn't alone in grappling with challenges in the rubber tire industry. As per Economics Minister Steinbach, a systemic and overall German issue is at play. In depth discussions with IG-BCE boss Michael Vassiliadis are underway to devise strategies for navigating these challenges.

Goodyear's Fürstenwalde site only retains a small portion of its facilities for rubber compound production, continuing to serve as a supplier for European plants. Fulda's tire production will also be ceased, with the company citing cheap Asian imports and inflationary pressure as contributing factors to the challenging industry landscape.

Potential Solutions

The working group's strategies for overcoming these challenges include, but are not limited to:

  1. Financial incentives such as subsidies, tax breaks, or investment grants.
  2. Job retention programs or vocational training for affected workers.
  3. Infrastructure improvements like transportation upgrades and environmental enhancements.
  4. Regulatory flexibility and streamlined processes to reduce operational costs.
  5. Community engagement for tailored support and potential local investment.
  6. Exploring alternative uses for the site, such as logistics hubs or industrial parks.
  7. Facilitating partnerships with other companies or organizations to optimize resources.
  8. Addressing environmental concerns and adhering to sustainable practices.
  9. Analyzing market dynamics and potential for site competitiveness.
  10. Direct negotiations with Goodyear to arrive at mutually beneficial solutions.

The working group's approach will be shaped by a detailed understanding of the site's unique challenges and Goodyear's specific needs, ensuring a tailored solution for the Fürstenwalde site.

Stay tuned for updates as the working group embarks on their vital mission to preserve the Fürstenwalde tire manufacturing site and secure the futures of its 930 dedicated workers.
