In a recent development, three MiG-31 fighter jets from Russia entered Estonia's airspace near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo without permission, prompting the Estonian government to request consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty.
The incident, which took place on a specific date, was confirmed by a NATO spokesperson. According to Estonian reports, Italian F-35 fighter jets of the Italian air force were involved in the interception.
Estonia, a Baltic EU and NATO ally, does not have its own fighter jets. Instead, NATO allies secure the Baltic airspace on a rotational basis. At the time of the Russian aircraft intrusion, Italy, whose air force was leading the Air Policing over Estonia, was supported by other NATO allies, including Latvia and Lithuania since August 2025. Germany had participated in air policing over the Baltic states until November 2024.
The Russian aircraft remained in Estonia's airspace for a total of 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw due to NATO's intervention. Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia stated that it is necessary to consult with allies to ensure everyone is on the same information footing and to determine the next joint steps.
The announcement was made by the government of Estonia in Tallinn. Prime Minister Michal also emphasised that the entire NATO alliance takes the incident seriously. Additionally, Swedish and Finnish fighter jets were reported to be on alert during the incident, although they are not NATO members.
Article 4 of the NATO treaty provides for consultations with allies when a NATO country feels threatened from outside. This provision was invoked following Russia's violation of Estonia's airspace, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the two nations.
