Workers will be safeguarded from radiation-related hazards through a new directive, proposed by the Commission.
In a recent development, Estonia, a Baltic EU and NATO member country, announced that it had requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty following an incident involving a violation of its airspace by Russia. The Russian aircraft, which entered Estonian airspace without permission, remained for a total of 12 minutes before being forced to withdraw, with the situation being brought under control by NATO forces. The entire NATO alliance takes such incidents seriously, and the recent violation of Estonia's airspace is no exception. Since August 2025, the Italian Air Force has been responsible for the air policing of the airspace over Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, ensuring the security of the Baltic NATO airspace. Previously, the German Air Force had participated in this task from March to November 2024. Estonia, along with its Baltic neighbours Latvia and Lithuania, do not have their own fighter jets and rely on NATO allies to secure their airspace on a rotating basis. In this instance, Italian F-35 fighter jets were involved in the NATO response. Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia stated that it is necessary to consult with allies to ensure everyone is on the same level of information and to agree on the next joint steps. NATO responded immediately to the incident and intercepted the Russian aircraft. This is not the first time Russia has violated Estonia's airspace. Estonia reported a second violation, this time involving three MiG-31 fighter jets near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo. The government of Estonia made this announcement in Tallinn, emphasising the importance of maintaining the security and sovereignty of its airspace in the face of external threats.
