Estonia has requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty following a violation of its airspace by Russian MiG-31 fighter jets near the Baltic Sea island of Vaindloo.
The air forces involved in the NATO intervention were NATO air defense forces from member states, who responded promptly to the violation by escorting the Russian aircraft and closely monitoring the situation.
Estonia, along with its Baltic neighbours Latvia and Lithuania, do not possess their own fighter jets and rely on NATO allies to secure the Baltic airspace on a rotating basis.
Prime Minister Kristen Michal of Estonia stated that it is necessary to consult with allies to ensure everyone is on the same information footing and to determine the next joint steps. The entire NATO alliance takes the incident involving Russia's violation of Estonia's airspace seriously.
Three MiG-31 fighter jets from Russia entered Estonia's airspace without permission and stayed for a total of 12 minutes. The situation was brought under control, and the Russian aircraft had to withdraw.
F-35 fighter jets of the Italian air force were among those involved in the interception. The immediate reaction by NATO to the incident underscores the alliance's commitment to the collective defence of its member states.
The request for consultations was announced by the government of Estonia in Tallinn, with the aim of ensuring a united response from NATO to any further provocations. The incident serves as a reminder of the ongoing tensions between Russia and its western neighbours, and the importance of collective security in maintaining peace and stability in the region.
