Fire breaks out at NPP, injuring eleven workers - Workers suffer injuries as stationary battery ignites, causing a fire.
The Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant, currently under demolition, has left eleven workers injured, as per Police reports. Five of these injured individuals required hospitalization. The operating company, Preussenelektra, confirmed that four individuals were admitted for observation.
No hazardous materials or radioactive substances were discharged during the incident on Wednesday. As a result, the public remains safe despite the fire at the decommissioned plant in Lower Franconia.
The fire erupted due to a blaze in a tent used for grinding work, according to the police. Meanwhile, Preussenelektra described the incident as a "small fire in the ventilation hoses of a mobile air filter system." Firefighters quickly extinguished the flames. Although the accident occurred, eleven demolition workers sustained only minor injuries. The Schweinfurt criminal police are working diligently to establish the exact cause of the fire. The nuclear regulatory authority has been informed, Preussenelektra stated.
The Grafenrheinfeld Nuclear Power Plant: A Brief History
Located in the Landkreis Schweinfurt, the Grafenrheinfeld nuclear power plant first went online in 1981. It was decommissioned in 2015 as part of the nation's nuclear phase-out. The decommissioning process began in April 2018. Since December 2020, there has been no nuclear fuel present in the plant. In August 2024, the most prominent structures of the plant, the cooling towers, were successfully demolished.
