Analysis of the current political landscape in the forthcoming state election in Rhineland-Palatinate, due in 2026, indicates an intriguing shift of voter preferences.
According to a poll by SWR's political magazine "Zur Sache Rheinland-Pfalz!", the CDU (Christian Democratic Union) would garner 30.0% of votes, representing a 2.3 percentage point increase from the previous election. Conversely, the ruling SPD (Social Democratic Party) would gain less support at 23.0%, a significant decrease of 12.7 percentage points compared to the last election.
A noteworthy trend emerges with the AfD (Alternative for Germany) gaining ground at 17.0% support, a substantial rise of 8.7 percentage points. The Greens (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen) would remain steady at 11.0%, while the FDP (Free Democratic Party) would struggle to meet the 5.0% threshold with 3.0% support, a decrease of 2.5 percentage points. Interestingly, the far-left The Left (Die Linke) would obtain 5.0% support, securing a 2.5 percentage point increase from the previous election.
The performance of the traffic light coalition of SPD, Greens, and FDP in the Rhineland-Palatinate state government has been subject to mixed reviews, with 47% of respondents expressing satisfaction, and 45% indicating dissatisfaction.
In a hypothetical scenario where the minister-president of Rhineland-Palatinate could be directly elected, 40% of residents would vote for SPD's incumbent Alexander Schweitzer, whereas CDU's top candidate, Gordon Schnieder, would receive only 17% support. A considerable 43% remain undecided.
As of now, there isn’t a clear preference for a future government led by either the CDU or the SPD, unlike the 2021 state election. The poll suggests that 37% favor an SPD-led government, while 39% prefer a CDU-led one. Notably, the 2021 election showed a notable preference for an SPD-led cabinet.
The AfD, currently suspended as a right-wing extremist party by the domestic intelligence agency, finds itself in a contested position, with 69% of respondents considering it as such. However, most AfD supporters hold a different view on the matter. In fact, 83% of those backing the AfD express indifference towards the label, provided the party continues addressing topics that resonate with them.
