Sven Schulze, a seasoned German politician, has been serving as the Chairman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) in Saxony-Anhalt since March 2021. In this role, he also represents the state in the German Bundesrat, focusing on committees related to agriculture, consumer protection, and economic affairs.

Schulze, who has been active in the CDU since 1997, began his political journey with the youth organization Junge Union. Over the years, he held various key positions within the CDU at the state level, including as a board member since 2006 and chairman of the Junge Union in Saxony-Anhalt. He also became chairman of the CDU's working committee for European affairs in the state in 2011 [1].

Before his current role, Schulze served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2014 until 2021. During his tenure, he held significant roles such as vice-chair of the Committee on Transport and Tourism and participation in committees on industry, employment, and digital issues [1].

As the Economy Minister of Saxony-Anhalt, Schulze has been at the helm of major industrial investment issues. One such challenge was the cancellation of Intel's multi-billion euro chip factory planned for Magdeburg. In response to Intel's decision, Schulze attributed the move to internal challenges and the negative impact of U.S. "America first" policies on European investments [3][4].

Reiner Haseloff, the Minister President of Saxony-Anhalt since 2011, has been a visible and audible manager during the corona period, explaining the policies of the state government in detail in online-transmitted press conferences. Under Haseloff's leadership, the CDU had an unexpectedly clear election victory in 2021, placing the long-time equally strong AfD in its place [1].

Haseloff, a vocal advocate for the East, has made a name for himself in recent years. During the DDR era, he was active in environmental research [1].

Looking ahead, a new state parliament will be elected in Saxony-Anhalt on September 6, 2026. Sven Schulze has announced that he will run as the CDU's top candidate for the 2026 state election, while Reiner Haseloff has decided not to run [1].
