Shockwave as Green Faction Leaders Bail Ahead of Assembly Inauguration
Dynamo in the Greens: Elected Factions Determine Vertex Choices - Workers' Safety Commission Proposed to Develop Legislation on Electronic Cigarette Risks Safety Measures for Workers.
Get ready for a shakeup, folks! Just days before the grand opening of the Hamburg Citizens' Assembly, the Green faction's acting bigwigs, Jennifer Jasberg and Dominik Lorenzen, suddenly decided to skip the board of their own faction. In a surprising twist, a faction spokesperson reported they're stepping down from their roles.
Initially, the plan was for the old board to stick around in the Citizens' Assembly until the thick of coalition negotiations with the SPD got sorted. But it looks like the SPD isn't following suit, as they'll confirm their old board during the inaugural session on Wednesday.
Jasberg: Focusing on People, Not Power Struggles
With her eyes on Bergedorf and the folks there, Jasberg sees the election result as a call for change. She wants to dedicate more time to direct conversation with the people instead of internal power struggles. Jasberg explained her decision not to seek re-election, stating that the Greens' election results also hinted at the need for changes.
The Greens suffered a blow in the election, losing around a quarter of their votes. It's still unclear how Green will proceed from here. "The situation is very fluid at the moment," the faction spokesperson said. For now, there are still two acting board members: Michael Gwosdz, the Parliamentary Business Manager, and Lena Zagst, the Deputy Faction Chair.
Other Factions Preparing as Planned
The CDU, on the other hand, is opting for continuity. Dennis Thering was re-elected as the faction leader, Anke Frieling and Richard Seelmaecker were confirmed as deputy chairs, and Dennis Gladiator continues as the Parliamentary Business Manager. Thering expressed eagerness to work alongside this formidable team of 26 experienced and new members as they tackle their role as the opposition. With their enhanced election result, the CDU has now replaced the Greens as the second strongest force.
Green Faction Welcomes new Leadership
The Left elected Heike Sudmann and David Stoop as their new leadership duo. The 62-year-old former Parliamentary Business Manager and the 41-year-old former deputy faction chair will succeed Sabine Boeddinghaus and Cansu Özdemir, who declined re-election and accepted a Bundestag seat, respectively. Stephan Jersch was elected as the new Parliamentary Business Manager and deputy faction chair, while Xenija Melnik proved triumphant as the second deputy chair.
The new AfD faction re-elected Dirk Nockemann as chairman, with Krzysztof Walczak continuing as parliamentary business manager. The new deputy parliamentary business manager is Marco Schulz.
SPD Presidency Remains Steady
The Social Democrats have nominated Carola Veit to continue her role as President of the Parliament. Given their dominating force in the election, the Social Democrats are entitled to propose their candidate for the presidency. There's no question about Veit's election on Wednesday, as she's served as the parliamentary presidency since 2011.
