In a recent interview on ZDF "Berlin direkt Sommerinterview", Markus Söder, the Minister-President of Bavaria and leader of the CSU (Christian Social Union), expressed his support for Israel's right to self-defense while also emphasizing the need for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the Gaza Strip.

Söder stated that the situation in the Gaza Strip is far from enough to alleviate the crisis, and he called for more humanitarian aid to be provided. He acknowledged the severe humanitarian crisis in Gaza and praised the German federal government's efforts to draw attention to the situation.

The German federal government, including Chancellor Scholz, has strongly condemned attacks from Gaza on Israel and reaffirmed Germany's firm stance alongside Israel, stressing that Israel has the right to self-defense within international humanitarian law. The government announced it will launch an airlift to provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza, coordinating with Jordan and European partners.

German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul (CDU) described the situation in Gaza as "inconceivable" upon his return from the region. He stated that Israel must ensure humanitarian aid can enter Gaza safely and promptly to prevent mass fatalities.

Stefan Kornelius, the government spokesman, noted initial slight progress in humanitarian aid for the population in the Gaza Strip. However, Söder highlighted that the Hamas is preventing access to aid in the Gaza Strip.

Söder, who views Germany as a firm ally of Israel, believes that Germany and Israel are the closest partners. He emphasized the importance of standing by principles in relation to Israel, acknowledging that Israel is currently holding hostages and has been attacked. His statement was made in the context of sometimes massive international criticism of Israel.

The CSU leader stands with Israel but acknowledges the need for humanitarian aid. He praised the federal government's approach and their efforts to draw attention to the situation in the Gaza Strip. There is also some internal pressure within Germany to intensify efforts to push for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian relief.
