U.S. customs dispute: Rich seeking practical resolution - Workers' Safeguard Proposal by Commission for shielding against dangers stemming from ionising radiation exposure

The ongoing customs dispute between the European Union (EU) and the United States continues to impact exports and threaten trade relations. The dispute, which began in March 2025, has seen the US impose punitive tariffs on certain European steel and aluminum products, suspending the previous tariff suspension agreement that had been in place since the G20 summit in 2021.

The tariffs have had a significant impact on Germany's exports to the US, causing them to fall to their lowest level since early 2022. This decline reflects the uncertainty and disruption caused by the tariffs.

Negotiations between the US and EU have been ongoing but have yet to yield any tangible results. The US has extended the negotiation period until August 1, 2025, but the talks remain inconclusive. In response, the EU has announced plans to reinstate tariffs and consider further countermeasures on US goods, indicating a tit-for-tat escalation in the dispute.

The EU Commission, which manages the trade policy on behalf of its members, has prepared lists of US products to which tariffs could be applied as countermeasures. The EU has also demonstrated a willingness to engage in dialogue by postponing its own suspension of tariffs multiple times.

Germany, as a key player in the EU, supports a "pragmatic" solution in the customs dispute with the US. Both the EU Commission and Germany have expressed a desire for a "pragmatic negotiating outcome" to be reached quickly to avoid further harm to the economy and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.

The EU Commission President, Ursula von der Leyen, has emphasized the EU's willingness to negotiate, while former US President Donald Trump announced the tariffs in a letter published on his online platform Truth Social. If implemented, these tariffs of 30% could have strong impacts on the economy and consumers on the other side of the Atlantic.

The customs dispute between the EU and the US remains unresolved as of mid-2025, with ongoing trade tensions impacting exports. It is clear that a resolution to this dispute is crucial for the continued prosperity of both regions.

  1. The EU Commission, in an effort to defend its member states from the economic impacts of the ongoing customs dispute, has prepared lists of US products that could potentially be subjected to tariffs as countermeasures.
  2. In the midst of the escalating customs dispute, Germany, as a key player in the EU, calls for a "pragmatic" solution, urging both the EU Commission and the US to quickly reach a negotiating outcome to avoid further damage to the economy and consumers on both sides of the Atlantic.
