The Sizzling Controversy: Germany's Border Rejections Under Dobrindt

Workers remain vulnerable to radiation hazards as the Commission has yet to approve a directive outlining safeguards against such dangerous exposure.

In the relentless conflict surrounding Germany's border rejections, Federal Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt finds himself stirring up a fierce storm. The RTL/ntv-Trendbarometer reports that 63% of respondents support the tough rejections ordered by Dobrindt, while a marginal 32% disapprove.

The opposition blasts Dobrindt for defying the law and fueling uncertainty among federal police forces. The Administrative Court of Berlin, in a recent ruling, condemned Dobrindt's rejection of three Somalis as unlawful. Despite the ruling, Dobrindt insists on pressing forward, citing declining asylum numbers to justify his stance.

A Tailwind of Approval: Political Affiliations and Border Restrictions

Support for Dobrindt's border rejections is particularly robust among CDU/CSU supporters (80%) and AfD supporters (92%). Among SPD supporters, 45% approve, while 46% disapprove. Those who align with the Greens and the Left display a more critical stance: Green supporters (25%) support Dobrindt's policies, while 72% reject them, and Left supporters (82%) speak out against them, with only 18% in favor.

Public sentiment towards Dobrindt's performance as Federal Interior Minister is mixed: 37% show approval, compared to 43% disapproving. While the CSU enjoys the most support among Union voters, there's plenty of room for improvement as only 56% of Union supporters are satisfied. The majority of SPD, Green, Left, and AfD supporters remain unimpressed with Dobrindt's tenure.

Keeping the Asylum Law Intact: A Contentious Debate

The clamor for reforming the asylum law, which allows many people to enter Germany but grants few asylum claims, is a recurring theme among Union politicians. They argue the existing law leads to unnecessary border crossing and complicates asylum examinations. Nevertheless, the SPD, Greens, and Left remain staunchly opposed to changing the asylum law outlined in Germany's Basic Law.

Slowly but surely, the asylum debate unfolds: 54% of respondents in the RTL/ntv-Trendbarometer advocated for upholding the current asylum law, while 34% expressed a desire for stricter regulations. A smaller 9% demanded a complete abolition of the law. Among supporters of the Greens and the Left, clear majorities (83% and 90%, respectively) firmly stand by the current regulations, while those in the AfD (50%), Union (40%), and SPD (30%) seek changes.
