Affairs Unravel at SPD Brandenburg Party Conference: Papenbrock Advocates for AfD Ban Analysis, But Remains Cautious

In the heat of the SPD Brandenburg Party Conference in Cottbus, designated deputy state chairwoman Wiebke Papenbrock has sparked controversy by suggesting a review of the potential ban on AfD (Alternative for Germany). "The idea of assessing a ban procedure isn't entirely absurd," Papenbrock grumbled to the German Press Agency, implying that while it may not change opinions, a careful examination is warranted.
The conference takes place on the weekend, conferring new leadership upon the SPD of Brandenburg. Former Interior Minister Katrin Lange, despite being nominated for reelection as the state chairwoman, was upstaged by Papenbrock from Neuruppin (Ostprignitz-Ruppin district). Lange's tenure was marked by a fallout with then head of Verfassungsschutz, Joerg Mueller, who she accused of withholding crucial information about the classification of the local AfD as a right-wing extremist endeavor—an accusation that is still under debate. With Lange's resignation in May, the upcoming election of Minister President Dietmar Woidke as state chairman is eagerly anticipated.
Lange's departure has left the SPD in a powerful yet precarious position, as Ines Hubner and Frank Steffen are nominated for co-deputy chairwoman and treasurer, respectively. Kurt Fischer is set to be officially elected as the general secretary, with Lars Klingbeil, the SPD federal chairman, predicted to make an appearance.
Disjunction in AfD Policy
Buried beneath the turmoil of leadership transitions lies the substantive debate on an AfD ban, a subject that the SPD state leadership is leaning towards supporting. "Now is the time to explore every legally secure and objective method at our disposal –a potential AfD ban procedure included," a motion notes. However, Papenbrock advocates for a measured approach. "When it comes to AfD, I can affirm that neither I nor my district council fraction Ostprignitz-Ruppin will collaborate with them in the future," she noted emphatically. "Nevertheless, exclusion isn't a viable option. Dialogue remains essential."
While the debate over an AfD ban rages on, the SPD under Papenbrock's guidance appears to remain steadfast, defying the odds after Lange's resignation. "We will draw courage from this hardship, for we have many dedicated individuals who work diligently and are highly motivated," she declared briskly. The SPD triumphed in the Brandenburg election of September 2024, garnering 30.9 percent of the vote. However, the party stumbled in the federal election of February 2025, falling behind both AfD and CDU with a dismal 14.8 percent.
Rural Presence on the Agenda
In her nearly two decades of political experience, Papenbrock plans to focus on both urban and rural communities. "Rural areas such as mine pose unique challenges, as Brandenburg encompasses a rich tapestry of city, metropolitan, and rural landscapes," she acknowledged. "It's imperative that we acknowledge and address the various life-worlds that our party serves." To foster this connection, the SPD aspires to increase its visibility in rural areas, revitalizing local offices with cultural events and engaging local associations, like those that provide colorful displays at weekly markets or city festivals.
