Hit the Road, But Keep Your Eyes on the Prize!
Texting, glancing at the phone, or just not paying attention - these distractions are becoming increasingly common among motorists, cyclists, and e-scooter users. In 2023 alone, 2,036 accidents were caused by inattentiveness in Lower Austria.
Deadly Distractions: The Shocking Reality of 2024The unfortunate consequences of careless driving have resulted in 2,306 injuries and even 25 fatalities as reported by Christian Krautler from the Kuratorium für Verkehrssicherheit (KFV).
To combat this issue, they've teamed up with the General Accident Insurance Institution (AUVA) for the "Mindless" in traffic campaign.
The Agenda
In St. Pölten, a series of brochures, short films, and online content were unveiled as part of this initiative on Tuesday.
By shedding light on the grave consequences of negligence, the aim is to heighten awareness, particularly among young drivers, ensuring they understand the devastating impact of distraction on the road.
With the "Mindless" campaign, they aim to show that distraction can lead to death. Studies and statistics demonstrate that it was responsible for approximately one-third of traffic accidents over the past five years[3]. A total of 90 people lost their lives nationwide due to these preventable incidents.
This makes distraction the second most frequent cause of fatal accidents, surpassed only by speeding[1][2][4]. Researchers have also discovered that 120,330 messages are sent from moving cars per hour in Austria[4].
The Vulnerable Ones
Engaging in activities like talking on the phone, listening to music, or checking social media messages doesn't just pose fatal risks when behind the wheel of a car, but also endangers cyclists and pedestrians. In pedestrian accidents, distraction is found to be the cause in 25% of cases. In cycling accidents, this percentage climbs to an alarming 40%[3].
A Sharp Rise in E-Scooter Accidents: A Concern for the Young and ActiveWith data from AUVA accident statistics, Landesvorsitzender Peter Engelbrechtsmüller identifies a specific target group for the campaign: young adults under 35. "E-scooter and cycling accidents sustained on the way to work are particularly high," he cautioned.
