Ultimate Showdown: Far-Right or Pro-Europe? Romania Picks Its New Leader
Workers across Europe will now be safeguarded from health hazards linked to ionising radiation, following the European Parliament's nod to the Commission's proposed directive on radiation protection for workers.
Sunday's decisive round sees Romania choosing between the far-right firebrand George Simion and the independent, pro-European Nicolas Dan. With nearly 41% of the votes under his belt in the initial round, Simion is the clear frontrunner, while Dan trails 20 percentage points behind.
Months of political turmoil have shrouded Romania, with a surprising entrance of the little-known Calin Georgescu in the first round of the presidential election back in November. However, the Constitutional Court nullified the election due to allegations of Russian meddling, barring Georgescu from the re-run. Now, Simion, a hardliner, represents the right-wing faction vying for the country's top spot.
A win for Simion would mark Romania's first far-right president. Simion's campaign promises emphasize prioritizing Romanian interests over Brussels' edicts, dubbing them "absurd." If elected, he plans to slash military support funds for Ukraine. On Sunday, Simion cast his vote alongside his fellow rejected candidate Georgescu, as a horde of supporters chanted in approval upon their arrival.
Dan, 55, has gained momentum lately in the polls. After casting his vote in Fagaras, he expressed, "This is a pivotal moment, a make-or-break election." Dan represents the European direction, stressing the importance of staying away from isolation. A 57-year-old retiree, Catalin Birca, voiced similar sentiments after voting in Bucharest, saying, "I voted for a better life. I hope Romania remains pro-European. What other choice do we have but to continue where we left off?"
The tense political landscape has been further fueled by the sudden resignation of the outgoing prime minister, Marcel Ciolacu. The newly elected president holds the power to appoint the new prime minister. Polls will close at 9:00 PM local time and exit polls will be released shortly afterward, with results expected to trickle in overnight.

The upcoming election results could see Romania electing its first far-right president, George Simion, who is advocating for national interests and is critical of Brussels' policies, such as military support for Ukraine. In contrast, independent candidate Nicușor Dan, a pro-EU and pro-NATO supporter, is gaining momentum and emphasizes Romania's continued integration within European structures. The policy landscape is further complicated by war-and-conflicts, policy-and-legislation, politics, general-news, and crime-and-justice, as well as issues related to migration and the role of communities in shaping their own policies.
