How to Play Wordle

Playing Wordle is a piece of cake! Find it here on the New York Times website. A new challenge is presented every day at midnight, according to your local time.

Kick things off with a five-letter word guess. The letters will turn green if they're correct and in the right spot, yellow if you have the right letter but in a different position, or gray if the letter isn't found in the day's secret word at all. For more advice, check out our play guide here, and my strategy guide here for some advanced tips.

Have you had enough chit-chat? Time for some hints! Let's dive in!

Weird Letters in Today's Wordle?

We consider letters common if they appear in the old typesetters' phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. Try memorizing this! Say it aloud as "Edwin Shirdloo." Imagine Edwin as a buddy, and it'll stick in your mind.

There are three common letters from our mnemonic today. The other two are uncommon.

I started by guessing RAISE, CHANT, and BLEND, then attempted GIVEN as a possible answer. This resulted in VIXEN as the ideal choice.

Yesterday's Wordle Answer

Yesterday's Wordle wasn't so tough. The hint was "a common fabric pattern," and the answer contained four common letters and one somewhat common letter.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle was PLAID.

Wordle Basics 101

The objective of Wordle is to uncover the day's secret word. When you first load the game, you'll see a blank row of letters waiting for your input. It's up to you to break the ice: enter any five-letter word.

With the colors that appear, you can deduce clues about the word: Green means you correctly guessed a letter and it's in the right place (e.g., if you guess PARTY, and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green).

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word but not in the spot you guessed it (e.g., if you guessed PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow).
  • Gray means the letter is not in the solution word at all (if you guessed PARTY, and everything is gray, then the solution can't be PURSE or ROAST).

With these hints in mind, make another guess, and then another, trying to nail the correct word before your chances run dry. You have six guesses, and then the game ends.

Best Starter Words for Wordle

What's a good starting guess? The best choices pack common letters to boost the chances of getting yellow and green squares to steer your guessing. (And even if you get all grays with common letters, that's still useful information to eliminate theories.) There's no single "best" starting word, but the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot suggests kicking things off with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Additionally, an MIT analysis found that you'll remove the most possibilities in round one by starting with one of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other top picks might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO have more vowels, yet starting with an emphasis on consonants, such as RENTS or CLAMP, might be a better strategy. Choose your tactic, and see how it works out.

Win at Wordle

In a nutshell, the key to winning at Wordle is gathering information about the letters in the target word. If you know the word must end in -OUND, for example, don't waste your first four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND. Instead, combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H lights up in yellow, you know the solution.

Keep in mind one last strategic note: the original Wordle utilized a list of about 2,300 solution words, but after the game was acquired by the NYT, the game now has an editor who hand-picks the solutions. Sometimes they are challenging words that wouldn't have made the original list, and sometimes they are themed. For example, FEAST was the solution on one Thanksgiving. So maintain a theme while guessing.

Alternatives to Wordle

If you're still wanting more five-letter guessing game fun, check out our top Wordle alternatives, arranged by difficulty:

  • Wheeldle, where you can take on one puzzle following another
  • Dordle and Quordle, requiring you to tackle two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles simultaneously, using the same attempts
  • Waffle, featuring a grid of mixed-up five-letter words; victory comes by rearranging the letters to solve the puzzles
  • Absurdle, which adapts the solution after each guess, but requires consistency in feedback. You must strategically drive it into a corner until there's only one possible word left; then you guess, and win
  • Squabble, a multiplayer Wordle game with a timer running. You incur damage if you spend too much time between guesses; the last one standing wins
  • Antiwordle, where you try to avoid guessing the day's solution. You're required to reuse any letters you (oops) guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.
