Mastering Wordle
Wordle calls home right here on the New York Times website. A new game drops every day at midnight,Coordinated Universal Time (UTC).
Start by guessing a five-letter word. If the letters match the secret word, they'll turn green. If the letters are right but placed incorrectly, they'll yellow. And if the letters are nowhere to be found in the solution, they'll turn gray. Learn more about playing Wordle here, and about my advanced strategy here. (There's also more info at the bottom of this post after the hints and answers.)

We'll regard common letters as those appearing in the traditional printer's phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU. (Make him your buddy; think of Edwin Shirdloo, pronounced as a name, and picture him as an old chum.)
There are four common letters hailing from our mnemonic today. The remainder is comparatively common.

Solving today's Wordle
My approach started with the five-letter words RAISE, CHANT, and BLEND. Following a hunch, I guessed GRUMP to rule out potential consonants and ultimately landed on WAGER. Since EAGER remained the sole possible solution, I sealed the deal by guessing it at last.
Yesterday's Wordle answer
Yesterday's game was of moderate difficulty. The hint was "applied to music," and the answer featured three common letters and two relatively common letters.
The solution to yesterday's Wordle was BONGO.
Fundamentals of Wordle
The essence of Wordle is to uncover the day's secret word. Upon opening the Wordle game, you'll see an unpopulated grid of letters. Your move: input any five-letter word.
Now observe the colors that are unveiled to get clues about the word:
- Green suggests you correctly guessed a letter and its position.
- Yellow indicates the letter is hidden inside the word but in a different position.
- Gray signifies the letter isn't in the solution word.
With this wisdom, take your guesses strategically to nab the correct word before time runs out. You're allowed six attempts, and then it's game over.
Starting Words for Wordle
What should you play for the first turn? Opt for words that feature common letters; this enhances the chances of getting yellow and green squares to reveal hints. The best openers often don't have a clear-cut choice, but the New York Times' Wordle analysis bot suggests these:
- CRANE
- TRACE
- SLANT
- CRATE
- CARTE
On the other hand, an MIT analysis proposes these initial words for maximizing possibilities:
- FLARET
- REAST
- TRACE
- CRATE
- SLATE
Additional options might involve ARISE or ROUND. Opt for words that incorporate a lot of consonants to minimize possibilities, or vice versa. Fine-tune your strategy and make it your own.
Winning at Wordle
Serious Wordle aficionados might delight in our strategy guides. This one discusses ways to use consonants for advantages, while this one concentrates on a strategy based on the most common letters. This advanced guide outlines a three-step tactic for nabbing hints while boosting chances of swift triumphs.
The most significant distinction between Wordle winners and Wordle losers is that winners utilize their attempts to gather information on what letters appear in the word. If you learn that the solution must end in -OUND, avoid wasting four attempts on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; instead, tactically select a word like MARSH, targeting the -OUND pattern directly. If the H lights up in yellow, you've narrowed the options considerably, granting you a leg up on the final answer.
Moreover, keep in mind that since the Wordle was purchased by the NYT, the game now features a hand-picked editor who curates the solutions. Occasionally, they might select challenging words that wouldn't have made the original list, and sometimes they may choose topical solutions. For example, FEAST was selected for Thanksgiving.
Wordle Challengers
If you've surrendered to five-letter guessing games, here's a cache of the top Wordle alternatives, arranged according to difficulty level:
- Wheeldle, enabling limitless puzzle replays
- Dordle and Quordle, with two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) simultaneous puzzles, sharing the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
- Waffle, in which you rearrange various five-letter words scrambled in a grid
- Absurdle, manipulating the solution after each guess but requiring consistency with previous feedback. The goal's to outmaneuver the game into a corner until only one solution remains, and then guess it to notch a victory.
- Squabble, matchmade for rivalry, featuring Wordle against other online players under time pressure. Last person standing is the winner.
- Antiwordle, contrary to conventional Wordle, in which you're compelled to reuse any correctly guessed letters instead of trying to match the secret solution. The longer the game takes, the better you're doing, as repeated letters limit your options.
