Let's Play Wordle

You can find Wordle here on the New York Times website. A brand new puzzle drops every day at midnight, your local time.

Get the ball rolling by guessing a five-letter word. The letters will turn green if they're correct and in place, yellow if they're part of the puzzle but not in the right spot, or gray if they're nowhere to be found in the day's secret word. Alrighty, let's dive into the hints!

We consider common letters to be those found in the classic typesetter's phrase ETAOIN SHRDLU (pronounced "Edwin Shirdloo," like a pal's name).

I began with RAISE, CHANT, and BLEND, then guessed GRUMP to eliminate potential consonants. I then tried WAGER, leaving EAGER as the answer.

Yesterday's Wordle answer

Yesterday's Wordle was a moderate challenge. The hint was "player in a game" and the answer contained three common letters and two somewhat common letters.

The answer to yesterday's Wordle was DEALT.

A Primer on Wordle Basics

The point of Wordle is to guess the day's secret word. Initially, you'll see an empty grid of letters, and it's all up to you to make the first move — type in any five-letter word.

Now, take advantage of the colors that appear to get insight into the word: Green indicates you've nailed a letter in the correct spot. If you guess PARTY and the word is actually PURSE, the P and R will be green.

  • Yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word but not in the position you guessed. If you guess PARTY, but the word is actually ROAST, the R, A, and T will all be yellow.
  • Gray means the letter isn't in the solution word at all. If you guess PARTY and everything is gray, then the solution isn't PURSE or ROAST.

With these tips in mind, go ahead and try another word, then another, until you land on the correct one before you run out of chances. You have six guesses, and then it's game over.

The Ideal Starters for Wordle

What should you go for in that initial guess? Words that consist of common letters tend to be the best starting points, as it increases the likelihood of getting yellow and green squares to assist your guessing. Though there isn't a single "best" starting word, the New York Times's analysis bot suggests starting with one of these:

  • CRANE
  • TRACE
  • SLANT
  • CRATE
  • CARTE

Meanwhile, an MIT analysis suggests starting with one of these:

  • SALET
  • REAST
  • TRACE
  • CRATE
  • SLATE

Other excellent choices might be ARISE or ROUND. Words like ADIEU and AUDIO pack in more vowels, but arguably it's better to focus on consonants first, using a starter like RENTs or CLAMP. Pick your strategy and see how it plays out.

Advice for Winning at Wordle

We've put together a few Wordle strategy guides that you might find useful if you're serious about the game. This guide covers using consonants as your allies, and this one focuses on a strategy that emphasizes common letters. In this advanced guide , we detail a three-pronged approach to fishing for hints while maximizing your speedy victory chances.

The key difference between Wordle winners and Wordle losers is that winners use their guesses to gather information about the letters in the word. If you know that the word must end in -OUND, don't waste four guesses on MOUND, ROUND, SOUND, and HOUND; combine those consonants and guess MARSH. If the H turns yellow, you know the solution.

One more tip: the original Wordle used a list of approximately 2,300 solution words, but after it was bought by the NYT, the game now has an editor who personally selects the solutions. Sometimes they can be tricky words that wouldn't have made the original list, and sometimes they are timely. For example, FEAST was the solution one Thanksgiving. So keep in mind that there might be a theme.

Wordle Alternatives

If you can't get enough of five-letter word games, the best Wordle alternatives, ranked by difficulty, include:

  • Wheeldle, which lets you play one puzzle after another
  • Dordle and Quordle, which demand you tackle two (Dordle) or four (Quordle) puzzles at the same time, using the same guesses. There's also Octordle, with eight puzzles, and Sedecordle, with 16.
  • Waffle, which presents you with several five-letter words, scrambled in a grid; you play by swapping the letters around until you solve.
  • Absurdle, in which you attempt to avoid guessing the day's solution. You're required to reuse any letters you (oops) guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.
  • Squabble, where you play Wordle against other people under a time constraint. Points are deducted if you spend too much time between guesses; the last one standing wins.
  • Antiwordle, in which you try not to guess the day's solution. You must reuse any letters that you (surprise surprise) guessed correctly, so the longer it takes you, the better you are at the game.
  • Engaging in pop-culture discussions and sharing Wordle tips have become a common trend on social media, as more people attend to the daily Wordle puzzle.
  • If you're interested in the entertainment aspect of Wordle, there are advanced strategies available to enhance your experience. check out the NY Times's advanced Wordle tips for more info.
  • On May 15, 2025,Wordle #1,426's answer was EAGER, which is a word often incorporated into various forms of entertainment, such as movies, books, and TV shows, reflecting its popularity in the broader culture.
