Wordle Insights (and Solution) for Saturday, 31st May, 2025

Wordle's answer for May 31, 2025 has been unveiled. Here's a guide to help you solve today's puzzle, followed by the solution. Please be aware that there are spoilers below for Wordle #1442!

If you're new to the game, a new Wordle puzzle goes live every day at midnight, in your local time. You can access it on the New York Times website. To start, guess a five-letter word, and the letters will turn green if they're correct and in the right position, yellow if they're correct but in the wrong position, or gray if they aren't in the day's secret word at all. For more information, check out our guide to playing Wordle and my strategy guide for advanced tips.

Here are today's hints:

  • None of today's Wordle letters are unusual, except for one that is fairly common.
  • There are no repeated letters today.
  • There are two vowels in today's Wordle.
  • The word starts with H and ends with T.

If you need a more specific hint, today's Wordle is a noun that is done daily.

Are you ready for the solution? Today's word is HABIT. I started with the word RAISE and found that HABIT was the best fit.

To recap yesterday's Wordle, the answer was IDIOM. It was an easier puzzle, with four common letters and one pretty common letter.

In case you missed it, here's a primer on Wordle basics: The goal is to guess the day's secret word. When you first open the game, you'll see an empty grid of letters. Make your first move by typing any five-letter word, and use the colors that are revealed to guide your guessing: Green means you correctly guessed a letter and it's in the correct position; yellow means the letter is somewhere in the word but in the wrong position; and gray means the letter isn't in the solution word at all. You get six guesses, and then it's game over.

To increase your chances of winning, it's best to start with words that contain common letters. The New York Times's Wordle analysis bot suggests using one of these: CRANE, TRACE, SLANT, CRATE, or CARTE. Meanwhile, an MIT analysis found that you'll eliminate the most possibilities in the first round by starting with: SALET, REAST, TRACE, CRATE, or SLATE.

The editor now hand-picks the solutions for the game, so keep in mind that there may be a theme.

If you'd like to explore alternative five-letter guessing games, the best options ranked by difficulty include Wheeldle, Dordle and Quordle, Waffle, Absurdle, Squabble, and Antiwordle.
